You have already made the first step because you are here! You made the decision to take action on your idea, and that is AMAZING! There are a lot of misconceptions on what the steps are in building a product, well we are here to set the record straight!
Get you NOTEPAD & PEN AND LET’S GET TO IT!
Note! It doesn’t include designing and it doesn’t include finding a manufacturer. Turning your ideas into beautiful products that people love take 3 simple steps:
#2 RESEARCH – Stay tuned to next episode
#3 SHOP – COMING SOON!
Doodle??? What the heck ?
The problem is most people jump into the development process half way down the road, and the problem is you are left with only a half-baked idea. There is no such thing as a bad idea, only ideas that were not fully flushed out from the beginning. Let me break it down for you.
It is scientifically proven that the more you doodle the better your ideas become. So get your notebook and your markers and get to it! This could include, diagrams, words even images! The point is to get brainstorming! Put it all down, the nitty -gritty so it becomes so crystal clear that you can taste it!
No one can help you build what’s in your head or in your heart if you cannot get it down on paper. PERIOD!
STEP #2: RESEARCH!
This means you need to become the expert in your field, don’t wait for someone else to point out what you are doing has already been done.
Ask yourself the following: What’s already out there? What’s missing, how are you unique and different?
What is happening in the industry you are about to enter? How will that effect your business?
These are all critical to know before you move forward. For example. If you say your product is better than the competition because it is Canadian made, you better know who else is using that as a selling feature. You need to know who else is doing what you are doing in the market you are about to enter.
The faster and the better you can gather this information, the faster and better your idea will come to life.
STEP #3: SHOP!
Yeah we said shop, so what does that mean? One of the most importantly things people forget is that just because we are the master and creator of this big idea, we are not necessarily a master at building product. So in order to bridge the gap between the idea person, YOU, and the manufacturing sector, you need to gather samples for reference.
You need to shop the market for items that can help explain to your manufacturer those critical details of your design. You know how they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words?” Well an actual physical sample is worth its weight in gold! This includes but is not limited to; fabric, items to show scale, and construction. Find as many details as you can in order to articulate your vision crystal clear.
This even includes how you want your product packaged. You want to shop for all kinds of samples that are going to help you translate your idea from a doodle on a napkin to a physical prototype.
3 SIMPLE STEPS: 1) DOODLE 2) RESEARCH 3) SHOP
It’s that easy! If you are early in the process start here or if you are further down the line and you are wondering why you are not getting what you want out of your designer or sample maker this is probably why. It is time to regroup! Start today, make the decision and commit to yourself Make Sh*t Happen!
