HEADS UP: There is profanity and some tears so get the tissues.
I’m crazy and I know that!! I’ve got big hairy ridiculous ideas that don’t always make sense at the beginning and I go running towards them like a mad woman as if i’m saving the world.
So when I approached a friend 3 years ago about joining me on a bat sh*t crazy idea, I was SHOCKED when she said ‘YA Let’s do this.’ That crazy idea was to transform the fashion industry - making products in 3 days, creating global maker spaces and raising money to invest in insanely disruptive fashion ideas.
That friend was Monique.
We had no idea what we were embarking on but we were 1 Million percent committed to making sh*t happen. We launched Hack-A-Thons, opened spaces, cultivated an insane community of experts and disruptors - building and launching some incredibly amazing ideas.
It’s fair to say we built, launched and tested EVERY IDEA we could possibly come up with - trying to figure out the best model to support innovation in fashion - some things succeeded and somethings sucked and we vowed never to do those things again. With 2 years under our belts we came together in the fall with big ideas for the new year - it was time to review everything we’d accomplished and set out a plan for making bigger sh*t happen in 2017.
It was during this time that we realized there were other burning ideas and passions laying dormant - Monique had a list of big hairy audacious ideas she wanted to pursue, just like every entrepreneur, they were burning a hole in her pocket. We tried very hard to figure out how to make time for side projects and make MSH District work together - however it became apparent that it was time for a new chapter and sadly Monique left MSH. This was OUR baby and it was the toughest decision we had to make - how do we move forward without jeopardizing our friendship and also continue to support each others big visions for making sh*t happen in the world.
I’m honoured to announce today that we are still madly in love, hehe bestest of friends, and true hustlers still collaborating and brainstorming weekly. MSH wouldn’t be what it is today without this fierce woman and I’m eternally grateful for her love and unwavering commitment.
So you can imagine the devastation and feeling when I got the call in January - a call that no one ever wants to get. “Hey it’s me, I’m not going to sugar coat this - I’ve got a lump and it’s CANCER.” It’s ok you can gasp too - feeling like the life had been sucked out of me and someone just punched me in the gut - I struggled to find the words to respond to my sister, my best friend, my right hand chief and the person I had just spent the last 3 years with attached at the hip. It’s not possible - WE can’t get CANCER, WE are invincible.
Well I was wrong and it’s Cancer. Monique was diagnosed with breast cancer in January - scary sh*t I know. In true Monique form she kicks into high gear - tackling cancer head on - f*ck cancer it can’t get me. With strength, courage and a fierce ass kicking spirit Monique learns more about her prognosis and the treatment that lays ahead and decides to openly share her life with all of us on her new blog SURPRISE IT'S CANCER. Getting the good, the bad and the ugly out of your head and into the world helps us deal with scary sh*t and also gives people space to help and support us along the way.
I won’t lie - I was scared, I’m still scared but I am confident together we can beat this sh*t. It’s taken me some time to get my thoughts on paper to share with all of you - our MSH Family and the people who’ve been with us and supporting us along the way. While I write this I occasionally burst into tears - but I am reminded even though sadness or fear may creep in we must stay strong and optimistic as the mind is a powerful thing that can create any future we have the courage to envision.
Please pop over to Monique’s blog and say hello - share your love and support with her I know she would LOVE to hear from you. MSH is way more than just another company - we are a family built on love and while I don’t know what the days, weeks and months look like ahead I am grateful we are on this journey together.
Happy International Women’s Day to all of our fabulous women!!
